#20: Laugh at yourself…lots

20 Oct #20: Laugh at yourself…lots

I figured since I dropped the ball yesterday I would treat you to an earlier blog post today and not make you wait until midnight.
But before I tell you what happened we have some blog keeping to do…

First off: Happy birthday to two amazing ladies that have rocked my world! Hope the next year of your life is even better than the last. I love you.

Second, remember when I told you to go to therapy? I went again today and it never ceases to amaze me how much it rocks my world. Go! Just sayin’. Ok…moving on now.

Can I explain to you what happened yesterday?
Great…thank you so much.
That’s what happened…just kidding. That’s the two girls’ birthday toast! Cheers!
So yesterday was one of those random, crazy days that sneaks in under the door and surprises you with it’s cold, refreshing greatness. (Read: Happiness.)
Now that I have slowed down my school track I only drive down to Atlanta on Wednesdays. This is the worst part of changing my plans. I didn’t stop to think about the fact that I would be at school less and, hence, see (much) less of my friends. This is the thing I miss most. So on Wednesdays I try to make the best of it.
Yesterday I had plans to spend the afternoon with my friend Kelly who I spent so much time with over the past year and was having some serious withdrawals from.
We talked about life, caught up, reminisced (about this summer), and generally just enjoyed each other…this is my favorite kind of hanging out.
This goodness I expected and thoroughly enjoyed the mostest, but what I hadn’t planned for was what came later…a birthday party. This birthday party I almost missed out on because facebook changed their notifications and I was left out of invite updates. (Stupid fbook.)
I think that was something like “I got swag..what.”
Long story short I did make it to the dinner…thanks to the persistent redhead whose birth we were to be celebrating!

And it was so worth the impromptu drive fifteen minutes in the opposite direction of home. (If you know me [and I assume by this point we arethe best of friends], you know this is an important detail because I’m a home-body, old woman, who hates to drive.)
The night was filled with yummy food, delicious drinks, lots of laughter, and even some dancing.
Moments with this same level of (in)appropriateness happened way too often last night.
Which brings me to my point…the dj decided that he would put on a Zumba playlist. I’m not entirely convinced this was planned, but I’m almost positive about it.
I couldn’t sit still. What respectable Zumba instructor would be able to?
The challenge? …Do Zumba. In the restaurant.
Now there was a time in my life where I probably would have gladly done this…but that time probably included too many drinks. Not that I’m proud of that, but just to contrast against the more sanecondition I was in last night. Unfortunately, with sanity comes insecurity and self-consciousness.
See it? There. Written all over my face.
As the songs continued to pour through the speakers I couldn’t believe how ridiculous I was being. Who cares? They wanted to see some Zumba and I could give them that. I would never see any of the people around me ever again.
Our blurry but cute redhead picture.
So in honor of living life without the restraints of others’ judgments weighing me down…I danced. It was ridiculous…who does the running man and the “grasshopper”/two-step in a restaurant? Apparently, I do. And it was hilariously fun. And I didn’t receive judgement but applause instead…from the table of ladies next to us who had just come from a zumba class! (Woo hoo! Connecting via Zumba, love it!)

So the lesson that I learned at Urban Flats? …Laugh at yourself…don’t take yourself too seriously and don’t mind what others think (because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind…lessons from Dr. Seuss).

#20: Laugh at yourself…lots (preferably with ridiculously awesome friends.)

Also, just as a special treat (because I still feel bad about yesterday)…this awesome song I can’t get out of my head. Enjoy, twenty-something friend.
